Leadership Lens with Nick Cooper #12 – From People First wins to Premier League hopes…

Last week’s optimism has paid off – we’re delighted to say that we were successful in securing the new cleaning contract we presented for Mobilisation is already underway, and we’re welcoming 15 new team members to Adept through TUPE.

This win is a brilliant example of our People First approach in action. It’s not just a phrase – it’s how we do business. We focus on creating secure, fairly paid, and rewarding roles that give people a sense of pride and purpose. That includes everything from our Real Living Wage and Real Living Hours commitments to the support structures we build around new starters, the regular face-to-face meetings with managers, and the personal development opportunities we offer through tailored training. It’s an approach that resonates with clients and colleagues alike – and we’re proud it continues to set us apart.

Elsewhere, the other major tender we submitted (for cleaning and security at a large shopping centre) is now in the hands of the decision-makers – we’ll hear the outcome on 2nd May. Fingers crossed for another positive result!

Back at HQ, we welcomed a new face to the team – Stuart Longworth, who joins us as Operational Support Manager. Stuart will be based in Manchester and will be heading up compliance and supporting our ops teams with rosters and scheduling. A big welcome to Stuart – great to have you on board.

And finally – for the three people still reading – Burnley took 4 points from 6 last week. Sheffield United lost both games, which means we’re just two wins away from a return to the Premier League. Not that anyone’s keeping track…

On a more serious note, I also finished watching the TV programme Adolescence last week. As a dad to three daughters between the ages of 9 and 16, it was a real eye-opener. It’s a tough watch at times, but such an important one – highlighting just how many young people are navigating overwhelming pressures, often without the support they need.

It’s made me think a lot about the role we play – not just as parents, but as employers and community partners. Whether it’s visiting schools to talk about careers, offering supported employment opportunities to young people, or making sure our own team feels seen, heard, and backed – the way we show up matters. Programmes like this remind us that for some, the workplace might be the first place they truly feel safe and valued.
